According to reports from Galaxy Club, Samsung is planning a substantial battery upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, potentially incorporating a 5,000 mAh battery – a considerable leap from the 4,400 mAh found in the Z Fold 7. This would involve combining a 2,369 mAh cell with another rated at 2,485 mAh, effectively pushing the total capacity to 4,854 mAh, marketed as 5,000 mAh by the company.

The Galaxy Wide Fold, the wider iteration of Samsung's foldable, is also slated for a battery boost, reportedly testing a 2,393 mAh cell that would bring its total capacity to around 4,900 mAh. While this represents progress, the bigger picture reveals a concerning trend.

The stark reality is that Samsung’s efforts still fall short of the competition. While a larger battery is welcomed, the Honor Magic V6 boasts a 6,660 mAh battery in its global version, scaling up to a staggering 7,150 mAh in its Chinese edition. Even Oppo’s forthcoming Find N6 is expected to pack a respectable 6,000 mAh battery. Apple, typically conservative with battery sizes, is rumored to be aiming for over 5,500 mAh, potentially even hitting 5,800 mAh with its own rumored foldable.

The Z Fold 7, despite being thinner than its predecessor, managed to house the same battery capacity—a feat of engineering. But it’s a testament to how far behind Samsung is in the battery game. The fact that even Apple is seemingly prioritizing larger batteries raises a significant question: why has Samsung been so reluctant to follow suit?

It's not just about capacity, either. Samsung’s charging speeds remain stubbornly low at 25W, while competitors are pushing towards 45W and beyond. This combination of modest battery size and slow charging leaves Samsung foldables feeling underpowered compared to the competition.

The company's hesitation to prioritize battery Technology is baffling. It used to be a leader in pushing the boundaries of smartphone specifications, but now appears to be lagging behind. Unless Samsung addresses this fundamental issue and significantly improves both battery capacity and charging speeds, its foldables risk becoming a target for criticism and a less appealing option for consumers.
