Samsung unveils snapdragon power-up for foldables, design shift incoming
Samsung's next generation of foldable phones is shaping up to be a significant leap forward, not just in features but also in design and processing power. A joint Instagram post from Samsung Mobile and Qualcomm's Snapdragon brand has confirmed a key detail: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will be the first Galaxy foldable to utilize a custom “for Galaxy” Snapdragon chipset, and a subtle design tweak is also on the horizon.
A narrower, thinner foldable: the galaxy z fold 8's new silhouette
The reveal, though lacking a full device view, showed a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip being placed on a circuit board. Crucially, the visible silhouette of the device doesn’t match the dimensions of the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, suggesting a new, more streamlined design for the standard Z Fold 8. Industry watchers are interpreting this as a deliberate move towards a wider, thinner profile – a welcome improvement for a device that has historically been somewhat bulky.
This “for Galaxy” variant, as with the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy powering last year’s Galaxy S25 Ultra, will offer a slight performance boost, estimated to be around 3.5% faster clock speeds. While seemingly modest, Samsung has demonstrated that these custom optimizations can translate into a noticeably smoother user experience, especially when handling demanding tasks on the foldable’s expansive display.
Processor power across the foldable lineup – with a twist
Samsung is committing to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy across both foldable models – the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the premium Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra – in all global markets. However, the strategy diverges when it comes to the clamshell Galaxy Z Flip 8. To cater to regional preferences and supply chain dynamics, Samsung will employ a dual-sourcing approach.
European markets and South Korea will see the Galaxy Z Flip 8 powered by Samsung’s own 2nm Exynos 2600 AP, while North America, China, Japan, and the rest of the world will receive the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. This regional split highlights the ongoing debate surrounding Samsung’s chip strategy and its reliance on both Qualcomm and its in-house Exynos processors.
The summer Unpacked event, slated for introduction in less than two weeks, promises a full reveal of Samsung’s 2026 foldable lineup, including the Galaxy Watch 9, Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, and a preview of the anticipated Galaxy Glasses. The focus, however, remains firmly on the evolution of the Galaxy Z Fold series, and the subtle yet significant improvements that are poised to redefine the foldable experience.
