Samsung s26 ultra: is a price cut the key to success?

The dust has barely settled on Samsung’s Galaxy S26 series launch, and already a fascinating pre-release poll is resurfacing, offering a glimpse into consumer expectations – and potential pitfalls – for the Ultra model. While the initial hype surrounding the new phones is undeniable, a recent survey reveals a surprising level of caution among potential buyers, hinging largely on one critical factor: price.

A divided opinion emerges

Just two weeks ago, I launched a simple poll asking PhoneArena readers whether the Galaxy S26 Ultra would be a hit. The results, initially overshadowed by the official announcement and subsequent discussions about Samsung’s storage Technology compromises and encouraging early sales figures in South Korea, now take on a new significance. A staggering 35.3% predicted a “moderate hit,” while a significant 31.32% believed the Ultra could strike gold – but only under a specific condition. This condition? A price that feels genuinely justified.

It’s not all doom and gloom, of course. Around 12% confidently declared the Ultra too good to fail, impressed by its design and perceived superiority over the S26 and S26 Plus. But the lingering question remains: has Samsung truly managed to keep the price in check, especially when considering the flagship starts at the same $1,299.99 as last year’s S25 Ultra?

The bottom line? The Ultra’s success isn’t guaranteed. The perceived risk of a flop, acknowledged by nearly 15% of respondents, shouldn't be dismissed. Samsung needs to actively address these concerns, and quickly.

Amazon already offering a solution

Amazon already offering a solution

Interestingly, Amazon seems to have already recognized this potential issue. The retailer is already offering the Galaxy S26 Ultra with a free storage upgrade – a promotion Samsung themselves should have considered – alongside a handy gift card. This begs the question: why not simply drop the entry-level price to $1,199.99? It's a move that could instantly sway those sitting on the fence.

While a permanent price reduction so soon after launch is unlikely, the fact that Amazon is already implementing aggressive promotions signals a broader market awareness. Samsung’s own willingness to explore similar incentives could be the difference between a resounding success and a lukewarm reception for their latest flagship.

The early signs suggest that the S26 Ultra is a phenomenal device, packed with Privacy Screen features, an insanely fast processor, and Galaxy AI enhancements. However, it’s the price, not the performance, that’s currently holding back its potential. Ultimately, Samsung's ability to adapt and respond to consumer sentiment will determine whether the Galaxy S26 Ultra truly lives up to the hype.
