Google's Pixel phones have always had a few exclusive perks, and the Pixel Weather app has quietly become one of the best. Now, it's getting a significant visual overhaul, bringing bolder icons and a cleaner aesthetic to what was already a surprisingly robust weather experience. But does this refresh truly elevate it to challenge the likes of The Weather Channel or AccuWeather?
New icons, sharper clarity

Google claims the redesigned icons offer improved contrast and clarity, especially beneficial for users with low vision. The core shapes representing different weather conditions remain unchanged; the transformation is purely a color palette adjustment. We're talking a vibrant blue for nighttime (represented by a quarter moon), a fiery red sun to signal heat, a sunny yellow with a fluffy white cloud for partly cloudy conditions, and striking blue raindrops and a red lightning bolt against a white cloud for thunderstorms. Even snow gets special treatment with dark asterisks against a white cloud backdrop.
What's particularly noticeable is the shift to a cleaner, white background across the app, a departure from previous versions. Now, a simple long-press on a city bar reveals quick-access options to move it up, down, or delete it entirely – a small change that significantly improves usability.
Can pixel weather finally compete?
Pixel Weather has consistently been an underrated gem. With this visual update, it’s taken a significant step towards becoming a true contender in the crowded weather app market.
