Google warns play store users about battery-draining apps
Tired of your phone’s battery mysteriously vanishing overnight? Google is finally stepping up to address the frustrating issue of power-hungry apps. Soon, the Google Play Store will display prominent warning labels on apps identified as excessive battery consumers, giving users a heads-up before they download.
A long-overdue crackdown on battery drain
This isn't a sudden shift; Google signaled this move last year, promising to crack down on apps that aggressively drain battery life. The new warnings, showcased in a recent Android Developers Blog post, will appear as a clear message: “This app may use more battery life than expected due to high background activity.” The goal is simple: empower users with information and encourage developers to optimize their apps.
But the initiative extends beyond just warnings. Starting earlier this month, Google deployed “wake lock technical quality treatments,” designed to curb excessive battery usage. What's a wake lock? Essentially, it’s a setting that allows apps to keep the phone’s CPU running even when the screen is off – a prime culprit for rapid battery depletion. Google is now targeting apps exceeding the “Excessive Partial Wake Lock” threshold.
So, what exactly makes an app land on Google's “naughty list”? The threshold is surprisingly low: an app needs excessive wake locks in more than 5% of user sessions. Beyond the warning label, these problematic apps will also face reduced visibility, being excluded from recommended app lists and “similar apps” suggestions. This is a direct hit to their discoverability and a strong incentive for developers to address the issue. Google is providing Android developers with guidance on how to reduce wake locks within their applications, a clear sign that they want to work with developers to improve the overall Android experience.
The real winner here is the user. While optimizing apps is always a continuous process, this new system provides a critical layer of transparency.
