Airpods max 2: apple discounts premium headphones – but is it enough?

Apple's latest foray into the high-end headphone market, the AirPods Max 2, landed with a surprising thud last week. While industry watchers anticipated a budget-friendly iPhone and an iPad Air refresh, Cupertino instead dropped a successor to its already pricey over-ear headphones. Now, Amazon is offering a modest discount – but it's hardly a revolution.

A mere 3% off: apple's reluctant sale

The original AirPods Max, launched back in 2020, quickly faced criticism for its premium price tag, a hurdle that limited its mass appeal. The new generation doesn’t exactly rectify this, still commanding a $549 price point across five color options. However, for a limited time, Amazon is shaving $19 off the Midnight and Starlight hues – a paltry 3% reduction. It’s a deal, technically, but hardly the kind to trigger a stampede.

The timing is curious. Amazon won’t even begin shipping the upgraded headphones until April 1st, and the e-commerce giant could easily revert to the full price at any moment. This fleeting discount feels more like a test of the waters than a genuine effort to move units. After all, seeing any price reduction on a freshly released, Apple-branded product is unusual, to say the least.

The question lingering in the air: are the second-generation AirPods Max worth the asking price? On paper, Apple claims 'elevated' active noise cancellation and improved sound quality compared to its predecessor, which already held its own. But unless you’re a die-hard Apple devotee, it's difficult to justify a purchase when Sony’s WH-1000XM6 and Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen) offer compelling alternatives at a similar, or even slightly lower, price point.

The new AirPods Max 2 introduce features like Live Translation and Conversation Awareness, but the overall value proposition remains questionable. While Apple’s audio engineering is undeniably impressive, the price-to-performance ratio feels somewhat skewed, especially when considering the robust competition in the premium headphone space. It's a gamble, and one that requires careful consideration before reaching for your wallet.
