Youtube finally lets free users multitask – globally!

For years, YouTube's picture-in-picture (PiP) feature has been a frustratingly exclusive perk of Premium subscribers and, in some cases, US-based free users. That changes now. YouTube has quietly begun rolling out PiP to all non-Premium users on both iOS and Android devices, a move signaling a significant shift away from restrictive feature gating.

A long-awaited feature, finally accessible

The update, revealed in a recent blog post, promises a smoother, more versatile mobile experience. PiP allows videos to shrink into a resizable window, continuing to play even as you navigate away from the YouTube app and into other applications. This seemingly small change drastically improves multitasking capabilities, letting you check email, respond to messages, or browse the web while keeping your favorite videos playing in the background.

But there's a caveat. While the global rollout is welcome, YouTube is maintaining restrictions on music content. Users outside the US, regardless of subscription tier (including YouTube Premium Lite), will still be unable to enjoy music videos in PiP mode. Furthermore, only long-form videos exceeding ten minutes in length are eligible for the PiP treatment. Short clips, unfortunately, remain tethered to the YouTube app.

The change highlights YouTube's evolving strategy. Previously, PiP was limited to Premium users worldwide and free users in the US. Now, the landscape looks like this: YouTube Premium users get full PiP functionality for all content. Premium Lite subscribers can enjoy long-form videos in PiP, but not music. And finally, free users get the same long-form video access as Premium Lite.

For those of us outside the US who’ve long felt the sting of regional restrictions, this is a genuinely welcome development. While I’ve never felt compelled to sacrifice a full video experience just to quickly glance at another app, the freedom to seamlessly switch tasks without interruption is a definite quality-of-life upgrade. It’s a testament to the fact that even the smallest improvements can make a big difference in the user experience.

The update is gradually rolling out, so ensure your YouTube app is updated to the latest version on your Android or iPhone to see if you’ve scored it. Don’t expect it to appear instantly; patience is key.
