My apple watch saved my ears: a surprising concert revelation
A surprising alert at a folk concert
You know me, I love technology and music! Recently, I attended a concert for a friend—a lovely folk musician, a welcome change from the ear-splitting intensity of heavy metal, which I also enjoy, mind you. Everything was going wonderfully until my trusty Apple Watch SE 3 gave me a rather startling alert. It warned me I needed to move away from the speakers! Honestly, it was a real eye-opener, and a testament to the ever-growing health tracking capabilities of these smartwatches.
The health revolution on your wrist
I've been reviewing smartwatches—from Huawei to, of course, Apple—for Computer Hoy, and it's become abundantly clear they’re all about comprehensive health monitoring. We’re talking everything from cycle tracking and medication reminders to vital signs and more. The base model Apple Watch, with its accessible price point (around €269) and comfortable fit, especially for smaller wrists like mine, is a particularly compelling option. I had no idea this little device held such a crucial secret!
Hidden gem: the noise detection feature
Amidst all the health features—the heart rate sensors, the ECG capabilities, the sleep tracking—I completely overlooked the Sound Notifications feature. It's tucked away, but it's become incredibly useful for protecting my hearing. It's amazing how much these devices are capable of, and it’s a reminder to really dig deep and explore all the features available to us. Who knew my watch could be a guardian of my auditory health?
Understanding sound levels and risk
Within the Health app, there's a dedicated section for hearing health. It tracks your ambient sound levels and noise exposure over the last 7 days, along with the audio levels from your headphones. You can see precisely how long you’re exposed to elevated noise levels, and it provides helpful tips for protecting your hearing, all measured in decibels (dB). It's a fantastic tool for understanding your potential risk and making informed decisions about your hearing health.
A monthly log of potentially damaging sounds
The Apple Watch keeps a monthly record of these noise spikes. You can access a history of notifications, pinpointing the date and time the watch detected a potentially harmful environment. It even tells you which Apple Watch device registered the alert—useful if you own multiple! While you can disable these notifications if you prefer to ignore the warnings (not recommended!), I’m all about prevention, so I'll be keeping them on. Exposure to sounds exceeding 80 dB for approximately 5.5 hours a day can lead to temporary hearing loss, so awareness is key!
Beyond the gadget: protecting your hearing
This experience was a real wake-up call for me. It’s a fantastic example of how technology can be used not just for convenience and entertainment, but also for proactively safeguarding our health. It's a reminder to be mindful of the sounds around us and to take steps to protect our hearing, especially in noisy environments. The Apple Watch SE 3 proved to be more than just a smartwatch; it’s a vigilant guardian of my ears!
