Verizon steps up: waives fees for unpaid federal workers

The partial government shutdown continues to leave a painful mark on federal employees, but Verizon is offering a lifeline. The telecommunications giant announced today it will waive late fees and provide flexible payment arrangements for verified federal workers struggling to make ends meet due to the delayed paychecks.

The shutdown, which began in February following a Congressional funding impasse, has disproportionately impacted employees within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel, vital for airport security, have been among the hardest hit, with many facing financial strain. While President Trump’s recent executive order promises paychecks for TSA workers starting Monday, employees within Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) remain unaffected by this action – and therefore, are eligible for Verizon’s assistance.

But the impact extends beyond airport security. The U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Secret Service, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and even the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are also grappling with the funding shortfall. For these individuals, Verizon’s gesture represents a tangible acknowledgment of the challenges they’re facing.

To qualify for the waiver and flexible payment plan, affected employees simply need to provide verification of their federal employment by calling Verizon at 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-922-0204). The move is a continuation of Verizon's history of supporting customers during unforeseen circumstances. Remember the Keep Americans Connected Pledge of 2020, signed during the pandemic by Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint? That pledge provided a safety net for customers unable to pay their bills and opened up Wi-Fi hotspots to everyone.

Back then, Verizon rolled out five weeks of free data and 15GB of 4G LTE hotspot data to small business postpaid and consumer customers. It's clear Verizon understands the importance of stepping up when communities need it most. The company’s willingness to extend this support during the current shutdown signals a commitment to being more than just a service provider—it’s a recognition of the human impact of government gridlock.
