According to a new report from Ookla, analyzing data from RootMetrics, T-Mobile has pulled ahead, leaving AT&T and Verizon scrambling to catch up. While the larger carriers are aggressively upgrading their infrastructure, T-Mobile’s early architectural decisions have given it a significant and widening lead.
The spectrum advantage: why mid-band matters
The key to this disparity? Spectrum. Not all spectrum is created equal – low-band offers range but lacks speed, mmWave delivers blazing speeds but struggles with coverage. Mid-band (1 GHz to 6 GHz) provides the sweet spot of both, and T-Mobile has secured a commanding lead in this crucial area, boasting 253 MHz of usable mid-band frequencies. Verizon sits second with 161 MHz, followed by AT&T with 151 MHz. This isn't just about quantity; it’s about what’s actually being used.

The report shows median download speeds of 485.20 Mbps for T-Mobile, nearly double Verizon’s 295.30 Mbps and significantly ahead of AT&T’s 273.40 Mbps.
