Gboard gets a trackpad-like upgrade
As a passionate tech enthusiast, I’m always excited to see how virtual keyboards evolve. While I’m partial to my Gboard setup on my Pixel, constantly battling typos can be frustrating. Thankfully, it seems Google is listening! Android Authority recently uncovered code indicating a significant upgrade to Gboard: a new Cursor mode designed to simplify text editing. This could be a game-changer for Android users.
What is the new cursor mode?
Currently, Gboard offers a “Glide cursor control” that lets you move the cursor left or right by swiping the space bar—similar to iOS’s Trackpad Mode. However, this new Cursor mode takes things a step further. When activated by pressing and holding the space bar, the keys disappear, revealing a virtual touch area and a cursor. You can then drag this cursor anywhere on the screen, just like a trackpad.
Unrestricted cursor movement
The key improvement here is the unrestricted cursor movement. Unlike the existing Glide cursor control, this new mode allows you to move the cursor in any direction—up, down, left, or right. This means effortlessly jumping to different lines or even paragraphs to correct errors or add text. It sounds incredibly intuitive, and I’m eager to try it out.

Android Authority stumbled upon this functionality while dissecting version 16.8.2.867538971-beta-arm64-v8a of the Gboard app. The code hints that Google is actively testing this feature, suggesting it's closer to release than some other experimental additions we've seen. It’s always fascinating to see these discoveries, and it gives us a glimpse into the future of Android’s keyboard experience.
Why this matters for android users
For many Android users, especially those who frequently type long messages or documents, this feature can’t come soon enough. The current method of swiping repeatedly to reach a specific point in a paragraph can be tedious. This new virtual trackpad promises a much more precise and efficient way to navigate and edit text, ultimately improving the overall typing experience.
Will it roll out soon?
While Android Authority managed to enable the feature, it’s important to remember that it’s still in the testing phase. Google hasn't officially announced its release. However, given the level of development visible in the code, I’m optimistic that we’ll see this Cursor mode roll out to Gboard users relatively soon. It seems like a logical and valuable improvement, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
